Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Hills was filled with the Chanukah spirit, both within its facility and throughout the community. Candle-lighting ceremonies took place each evening, led by the on-staff rabbi, Rabbi Zavel Pearlman, accompanied by delicious latkes and, of course, donuts. The halls buzzed with activity as family members, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, joined in the festivities.
The annual Chanukah party was a highlight of the celebrations, featuring a talented musician who played beloved Chanukah tunes. Residents and their families enjoyed the warmth and light of the holiday, with an abundance of gelt, latkes, and donuts to go around. A cherished friend of the facility, Mr. Izzy Root, generously brought hats, scarves, socks, and other thoughtful gifts for the residents, which were deeply appreciated.
Community members also contributed to the joy. Marilyn Herman, along with Natalie Hammerman and Arlene Mittleman, crafted beautiful pierced earrings, fused glass necklaces, and crocheted blankets, which made meaningful gifts for the residents.
Margaret Tietz was fortunate to have the support of many groups that made Chanukah truly special. The chag began with students from Rabbi Yossi and Dina Blesofsky’s Chabad School of Northeast Queens, who created beautiful art projects with the residents and sang traditional Chanukah songs. The heartfelt interactions between generations brought smiles to everyone involved.
On the last day of Chanukah, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from YCQ visited, bringing cheer and excitement. They sang lively songs and played Chanukah Bingo, which was enjoyed by all.
Another highlight was the visit from Lander College students, who have always been wonderful friends of Margaret Tietz. Their singing in the halls inspired joy and encouraged residents, families, and staff to join in, creating a harmonious and uplifting atmosphere.
Beyond the facility, Margaret Tietz extended Chanukah cheer to several local senior centers. They hosted celebrations at Common Point Queens on 108th Street in Forest Hills, two parties at the Young Israel Senior League in Forest Hills, as well as events at the Young Israel Queens Valley Senior League, the Rego Park Senior Club, and Boulevard ALPs. Bringing a frelichen Chanukah to so many was both a privilege and an honor.
